Shopping for a Lawn Mower

When shopping for a new lawn mower, most homeowners consider price, brand, features, and sometimes even the dealer. But the most important factor in buying a mower is the type of lawn you have. Do you have a postage-stamp-size lot or an open expanse of lawn? Must you mow up and down hills, along fences, around flower beds, or between shrubs and trees? The size, shape, and topography of your property will influence which kind of mower suits you best.

The suggestions listed below can help narrow your search and steer you toward the best mower for your yard. Simply find the yard size that most closely matches your property and compare the options.

Walk-Behind Push Mower – For Small Yards
Don’t mind a little exercise? These have a gas engine that makes them more powerful than electric or reel mowers, so they can easily mow down tall grass and tough weeds. Since you have to push, they’re best for small, flat lawns. If you’ve got a lot to mow, you’ll be looking to upgrade…..or a neighbor kid to hire on those 100-degree days. Typically 21 inch cut. We carry Honda Lawn Mowers and Exmark Lawn Mowers in this style.

Walk-Behind Self-Propelled Mower – For Medium Yards
These have a gas engine and drivetrain that powers the mower forward. They’re easy to use on any terrain.  Rear-wheel-drive models excel at cutting on hills. Most self-propelled mowers are variable-speed, allowing you to adjust the mowing speed to your stride and pace. Typically 21 inch to 30 inch cut. We carry Honda Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers and Exmark Self-Propelled Walk Behind Mowers.

Simplicity Riding MowerLawn Tractor – For Medium Yards
These provide a comfortable way to mow lawns quickly and efficiently. Riding mowers in this range can handle gentle slopes, so a good one can take on even a large lawn and can also handle a work cart. But because they’re slower and narrower than the more expensive garden tractors, you’d have to invest more time in mowing a big yard. We carry Simplicity™ Riding Mowers.

Garden Tractor or Compact Tractors – For Large Yards
The large, powerful motor and wider mowing deck makes fast work of the largest lawns. They’re very comfortable to ride and will handle most terrain. Plus, they can be multipurpose: A garden tractor can handle a snowplow blade, aerator, fertilizer spreader or work cart. We carry a Simplicity™ Garden Tractor with attachments and a Ventrac Compact Tractor with Ventrac attachments.

Wide-Cut Commercial Walk-Behind Mower – For Large Yards
A commercial walk-behind mower features mowing decks from 36 to 52 inches, powerful drivetrain and engine. They mow very fast and can handle all terrain. They’re perfect for large lawns and mowing around trees, shrubs and other obstacles. Although it’s self-propelled, you may want to walk behind it (if you want a vigorous workout) or ride on a sulky/velke when not on steep hillsides. We carry Exmark Commercial Walk Behind Mowers and Ferris Commercial Walk Behind Mowers.

Exmark Zero-Turn Mower

Zero Turn Riding Mower – For Large Yards
A favorite of professional landscapers, Zero-Turn Mowers (ZTR) mowers are fast, powerful and can turn on a dime and are controlled with dual lap bars. They’re perfect for large lawns and mowing around trees, shrubs and other obstacles. Zero-turn mowers are great for flat and rolling areas but are limited as to the amount of slope that it can handle. If a lot of slope is present, you need to go to a commercial walk-behind mower or garden tractor. We carry several brands of Zero-Turn Mowers, including Exmark Zero Turn MowersFerris Zero Turn Mowers
